ULTRASONIC SHELL & CHIME THICKNESS GAUGING

Precision pulse-echo ultrasonic thickness measurement (UTM) to ±0.001". Non-destructive structural hoop stress analysis, corrosion rate calculations, and remaining service life forecasting for municipal and industrial water tanks.

PULSE-ECHO ACOUSTIC MEASUREMENT

Ultrasonic Thickness Measurement (UTM) operates on the principle of high-frequency acoustic wave propagation. A piezoelectric transducer emits a short ultrasonic pulse (typically 2.25 MHz to 10 MHz) into the carbon steel substrate. The acoustic pulse travels through the metal at the known speed of sound in steel (5,920 meters per second / 0.2330 inches per microsecond) and reflects off the opposing back wall or an internal flaw.

By capturing the exact round-trip transit time ($t$), our digital flaw detectors calculate the true metal wall thickness ($d$) using the fundamental acoustic relationship:

d = (v × t) / 2

We utilize dual-element delay-line transducers capable of penetrating heavy external industrial coatings without requiring destructive surface grinding. This enables continuous high-density mil-mapping across shell rings while the tank remains full and in service.

STRUCTURAL CAPACITY & LIFE FORECASTING

How AVIS converts raw ultrasonic point readings into certified structural integrity calculations under AWWA D100 Section 3.

AWWA HOOP STRESS

AWWA D100 SEC 3.3

The minimum required shell thickness ($t$) to withstand maximum hydrostatic liquid head pressure is calculated per the design standard:

t = (2.6 × H × D × G) / (S × E) + CA

Where $H$ = water height (ft), $D$ = diameter (ft), $G$ = specific gravity (1.0), $S$ = allowable tensile stress (psi), $E$ = weld joint efficiency (0.85), $CA$ = corrosion allowance.

CORROSION RATE

CR FORMULA

Calculating the true historical metal loss rate (inches per year / mils per year) based on original construction nominal gauge versus active field UTM data:

CR = (t_nominal - t_actual) / Years_in_Service

Reveals whether local corrosion is operating at a standard uniform atmospheric rate (<1 mil/year) or an accelerated localized pitting rate (>3 mils/year).

REMAINING SERVICE LIFE

RSL FORECAST

Forecasting years until the shell reaches minimum allowable structural thickness before catastrophic ductile rupture occurs:

RSL = (t_actual - t_minimum) / CR

Empowers municipal finance directors and utility boards to budget tank relining, cathodic system overhaul, or plate replacement years in advance.

THE FOUR HIGH-RISK CORROSION ZONES

Where our ultrasonic technicians concentrate high-density scanning grids to intercept silent structural failures.

  • ✓
    Shell Ring 1 & Base Chime Plate Subjected to maximum hydrostatic head pressure and vulnerable to underside soil-side corrosion where moisture pools on the concrete ringwall.
  • ✓
    Circumferential & Vertical Weld Seams Heat-Affected Zones (HAZ) around original welds experience micro-galvanic cell potential differentials, accelerating preferential groove corrosion.
  • ✓
    Roof Truss Members & Vapor Space Above the operating water line, condensation combined with off-gassing chlorine vapors creates a corrosive acidic vapor space that rapidly thins steel rafters.
  • ✓
    Inlet/Outlet Nozzle Necks & Sump High-velocity turbulent water scour causes impingement wear on nozzle necks and floor sump transitions, eroding protective coatings.
